1935年

Bucky

Everyone thinks my story begins with a mask...and they're right. But it isn't the mask they think.

Bucky

Bucky

James.

Bucky:

Shhh…She just fell asleep.

You should try to rest too, son. It's been a long day.

Bucky:

Dad, I…

I know, James. I miss your mom, too. But you have to stay strong…for your sister. Becca needs you more than ever.

Bucky

A brave face…that was my first mask. Dad and I both tried to make family life as normal as it was before my mom died. And we had some fun years. Some good memories, things I still hold on to.

Bucky

Butthat burden wasn't easy for a little kid to carry. I may have pretended to be strong and happy…But I was angry underneath it all. Angry at the whole damn world.

Bucky

Bucky

I knew I was letting dad down every time I got in trouble…

Bucky,

Bucky…you have to stop it with the fighting.

Bucky:

可是Frankie说……

Yeah…but Frankie said…

I don't care what he said, you're better than this. Now I want you to promise me there'll be no more of this.

Bucky:

Okay…I promise.

Bucky

Promises aren't easy to keep when you're a kid…In my heart, I know dad knew that. He was always so understanding. But it still hurts when I remember the last thing he said to me.

Bucky

I'm disappointed in you, Bucky. You really let me down here.

Bucky:

I'm sorry, dad…I didn't mean ta…I just -- I --

Just go to your room, we will talk about this when I get back.

Bucky

I still remember sitting there in my bed, waiting…Thinking over what I’d say. What new promises I'd make…what new chores I'd agree to do. Just so he'd never be disappointed in me ever again. But dad never came home from manoeuvres that day.

James Barnes Junior? May we come in? I'm afraid there's been an accident, son.

Bucky

The days moved fast after that…Almost a blur. As they put dad in the ground. And then explained some deal where my kid sister would be get sent off to boarding school. But I would stay on the base, with dad's old pals looking out for me.

Samson少校:

Jimmy

Bucky:

Bucky

I used that mask dad taught me to wear even more, then...To hide how scared and alone I really felt. And I wore it for a long time after that.

1940年

Bucky

Bucky:

Walland:

Barnes……

Bucky:

Walland:

Bucky:

Walland:

Bucky(对士兵们):

Bucky

Bucky

The local police transferred us to the brig at Camp Lehigh. And the brass left me there long enough to cool me down…and think about how dad would've felt to see me right then.

Samson少校:

Bucky,Bucky,Bucky.

Bucky:

Samson:

Bucky:

什么?

Samson:

Bucky:

Samson:

Bucky:

Samson:

Phillips

James.

Bucky:

Phillips:

Bucky:

Phillips:

Bucky:

Phillips:

Bucky:

Phillips:

Bucky

Of course, you know what came next. After my birthday they shipped me off for training in the England, with the S.A.S. What my special assignment was, they didn't wanna say. But they wanted me to know how to fight better than any soldier out there. They were the longest months of my life. I was sore and exhausted nearly every moment. But one night I didn't just hit my bunk and passed out, because one of the guys said there was somethin' I had'ta see.

Bucky

And that Sentinel of liberty Captain America thwarted evil yet again. Yes, America's super-soldier saved the day in this second outing, demolishing an illegal weapons ring of the stolen army goods!

Bucky

For the rest of my training, I couldn't stop thinking about this "Captain America" -- whoever he was. And I kept going back every night to see more newsreels, studying his every move. I'd never seen anyone that fast…Deflecting bullets with his shield. But there was one thing nagging at me, though…If the Cap really was a super soldier…Shouldn't he be over here fighting the Nazis? What good was a super solider if he wasn't on the front line? I guess that when I knew it was just a matter of time before America got into the war. After two months, they shipped me off again in the middle of the night. If I' d known how valuable I was to the U.S government, I woulda pawned myself for a profit. But I still had no clue what this assignment of mine was. And my escorts were as forthcomin' as a bag of hammers. I'm sure as heck didn't expect home to be my destination. After a few weeks of evaluation, I got an invite to demonstrate my training for the higher-ups. Only nobody was there to watch. Just me and the soldiers I was fighting. Or so I thought.

What do you think?

Steve Rogers:

He's a bit young, isn't he?

Phillips:

Rogers.

He's sixteen…all of four years younger than you, Rogers.

Bucky

I spotted them just before I knocked out the last guy. And as they approached, I knew who it was with the general. I don't know how, but I just knew. And then I just knew all my training in England had been for. I barely even heard the general introduce us.

Phillips:

——Steve Rogers

-- Corporal Steve Rogers, also known as Captain America. And if you can pass muster, you're going to be his partner.

Bucky:

Sir, yes Sir!

Phillips:

Rogers, he's in your care until 0600 tomorrow. Get him up to date.

Steve:

是,Phillips将军。

Yes Sir, General Phillips.

Bucky

Our old house was full of ghosts, naturally…Of all of us…But strangely, it didn’t hurt to be there. Not anymore…

Bucky:

Wow, I haven't been back in years. Still even smells like dad's cigars…weird, huh?

Steve:

Memory's a strange thing, James. Never know what will set it off.

Bucky:

You aren't kiddin' .

Bucky:

So, what's in the box?

Steve:

It's your uniform. If you're going to be Captain America's partner, you'll need it.

Bucky

…'Cause I knew dad would be proud of me. For growin' up.

Bucky:

Oh, wow…Hey, you really have'ta stop callin' me James…

Steve:

So, what do I call you, then?

Bucky:

How about you just call me Bucky?

Bucky

And that was the day I took off one mask, realizing I didn't need it anymore. And I put on a new one…for a new life. But, of course…that was my troubles really began.
